Flora Elizabeth McDonald Wise

It is with great sadness that the family of Flora Elizabeth Wise announce her passing on December 7, 2012 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

Flora was born to Adelaide and Alfred McDonald at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kenora, Ontario on March 7, 1912.

She is survived by her sister Beatrice Stewart (Winnipeg) and her children, Gary Wise (Joan), Carolyn Cameron (Don), Muriel Anderson (Ken), Neil Wise (Peggy) and Lesley Wise (Maurey Bedard), grandchildren Elizabeth Watt (Jay), Kathleen Wise, Margot Craig (Kerry), Lana Lea (Derek), Maureen Hutchison (Tim), Kevin Cameron (Charmaine), Heather Cameron-Lamb (Stephen), Suzanne Halley (Clay), Keith Anderson (Debbie), Kirsten Gonzales (Gerritt), Brad Wise (Jennifer) and Simon Wise (Kathleen), as well as 20 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Len Wise in 2002, her daughter Joyce Curry, sister Gertrude Duggan and brother Philip Macdonald.

Flora lived her entire 100 years in Kenora. Her early years at her childhood home on 4th Street North were very happy days with her family and many friends. She enjoyed the simple pleasures that a young Kenora afforded: picnics at Coney Island, dances at the Rowing Club and camping in the summers at East Hawk Lake.

Before her marriage to Len Wise on September 24, 1937, Flora worked briefly for Rupert Moore Insurance as a secretary. Flora and Len raised their six children, first at a house on First Street South and then for many years at their home on the Airport Road. After all the children left, she spent summers at the camp on Black Sturgeon Lake, working with Len to create a garden that fed multitudes, and wintering in Florida. For the past 18 years she has enjoyed a fulfilling, independent life at Benedickson Court.

Flora will be remembered by her family as a loving and accepting mom, taking great pride and pleasure in all of her children and grandchildren. She was always happiest when surrounded by her family and, with her positive outlook on life, saw the best in everyone.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at the Notre Dame Catholic Church.
