The family is saddened to announce the passing of Fred Lavern Morrison, 72, on the evening of March 8, 2026.
Fred passed with the love of his life Gail by his side and surrounded by family. Fred was a loving husband, father, brother, papa, great grandfather, and friend to all. He will be deeply missed and cherished by his family, his loving partner Gail Skead, son, Tim (Wendy); daughter Carrie (Jay); grandchildren, Tyson (Megan), Jillian (Patrick), Chloe (Konnor), Nate and his great grandchildren; Tate and Ellaina. He will also be remembered by his brother Jerry (Kelly), and his extended family; Eleanor (Bert), Douglas, Calvin (Lisa), Gary, Cindy (Harold), Nick (Rhonda), Tanis (Larry), Willa and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Fred was predeceased by and will be reunited with his parents, Allistar Morrison and Ella Bob of Sabaskong, his siblings, Agnes, Dorothy, Rose, Albert, Mike, Edwin, Donald, and Conrad. Fred was born on November 1, 1953 in Fort Frances, Ontario and was a member of Ojibways of Onigaming and lived as a community member in Wauzhushk Onigum Nation with his partner Gail. Fred and Gail met at Beaver Brae Secondary School and were inseparable ever since. They later on began a family and raised two children, Tim and Carrie in the home Fred built for Gail on Lake of the Woods in Wauzhushk Onigum Nation. Fred was a fluent Anishinaabemowin speaker and worked as a Hostel supervisor at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario for over 25 years.
Fred was a sportsman and avid fisherman, he excelled at hockey and baseball/fastball where he played with many friends, and family. He played fastball with the Redmen and the Braves and was an exceptional third baseman, Mr. Golden Glove. He also played hockey with many different teams/organizations including the Rat Portage Braves where he received numerous awards and MVP’s. You could always recognize Fred in his yellow Jofa helmet. Fred also spent a lot of his summers fishing in many bass and walleye derbies including the Kenora Bass International (KBI) where he would partner up with his son Tim and fished together for many years. They both enjoyed bass fishing, especially together. After Fred retired from his sports you could find him cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets. He especially loved watching and cheering for his daughter, Muck, while she played many sports including hockey, baseball or football.
Fred will also be remembered as the best papa ever or “old papa” as Tate and Ellaina would call him, as his grandchildren and great grandchildren were a very special part in his life. Whether it be birthdays, holidays, visits, or even rides to and from school, papa would always be there with a smile and an abundance of love that will continue to be cherished evermore.

A Wake Service will be held at the Youth and Elder Building on Powwow Island in Wauzhushk Onigum, Ontario, on Friday, March 13th, starting at 1:30pm. Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, beginning at 10:00am with services officiated by Elder Gilbert Smith, burial to follow.
