June 8, 1963 – January 10, 2017
On January 10th, 2017, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Hazel Kathleen Meekis passed away after a lengthy battle with diabetes. She is gone from us to join her loved ones.
Hazel has raised her family in the Dryden and Ignace areas and has family living in many areas of Northwestern Ontario.
Hazel has lived and suffered with diabetes for many years. Hazel was a very kind-hearted person to know and had the utmost respect for the people in her life and the friends she met. Hazel was very compassionate and caring, quiet, thoughtful of others, never judged others and tried to look after her responsibilities as a grandmother and mother even though she was very ill to the very end.
Hazel is survived by her partner, Ken Barnes, her children, Crystal Meekis, Charity Meekis, Savannah Meekis, Brandon Barnes (Stephanie) and Jasmine Barnes, her grandchildren, Tyrese Brittain, Keanna Brittain, Kearra Brittain, and baby girl Barnes. Her step-children, Lynn Barnes, Danielle Barnes and step-grandchildren.
Hazel is also survived by her parents, Jonah and Peggy Kakepetum and brothers, Troy (Connie), Leon (Karen), sisters, Bonny (Bob), Sophie (Lorne), Laura (Jerry), Janice (Terry), Garylene (Clayton) and Louanne (Starsky).
Hazel has many nephews and nieces too numerous to mention but will be sadly remembered and missed by all these children.
Hazel was predeceased by her baby son, Michael Stanley, nephew, Bobby Jameson (1997) and nephew, Rain Suggashie (2015) and grandparents, Nancy and Noah Kakepetum.
We, the family of Hazel Kathleen Meekis are honoured to have known her as a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, friend and we all should try to realize that she is no longer in pain and that she has went to heaven to join her loved ones that were waiting for her and we have to let her go.
