Helen Churney (nee Wade) April 12, 1920 – September 8, 2019

With heavy hearts, her family by her side Helen Churney (nee Wade) a resident of Pinecrest Home for the Aged passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the age of 99.

She is lovingly remembered and mourned by her daughter Wendy (Marty), Grandsons Martin (Kirsten), Michael (Stephanie) and Great Grandsons Ryan, Jace, and the newest member of the family who was born 6 days prior to her 99th birthday Martin Robert Sawyer, her son Bill, and sister Evelyn Makinen.

She is predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents Fred and Mary Wade, sister Kathleen and brother in-law Alvin Hager, brother in-laws Joseph Chorney and his wife Frances, Mike Churney and his wife Ann, Sister in-law Ann and her husband Paul Zroback. She has many nieces and nephews.

Helen was born in Emo, Ontario on April 12, 1920. Her family moved to Kenora when she was 24 years old. She had polo in her late teens. This was a challenge for Helen as she had to learn everyday tasks like walking and talking all over again. She took piano lessons growing up, but was unable to play after she had polio.

She was an avid gardener. When she was no longer able to tend to her vegetable and flower gardens she continued to grow flowers in her home. She loved to knit for her Grandsons. Now, her Great Grandsons wear their Dad's knitted sweaters. She had unconditional love for all of her grandchildren who were so special to her in so many ways.

She always had a jigsaw puzzle on the go and she spent many hours working on crosswords puzzles. She loved all animals, especially dogs, cats and birds and was known to feed them from time to time.

A Memorial Service will be held at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery.

Thank you to the nurses and staff at Pinecrest where she spent the last 9 years, especially Unit 1, and a very special thank you to the nurses who had taken her to Dairy Queen September 6, 2019.

A very special thank you to her personal caregiver Sandy for spending quality time with Mom.

In honour of Helen, donations to the Cat Shelter, It's a Dog's Life or Pinecrest Home for the Aged would be greatly appreciated by the family.
