Imba passed away peacefully at the Pinecrest Hospice on August 15, 2019, surrounded by family and loving care.
Imba was born November 11, 1924 in Keewatin to Magnus and Margaret Sigurdson. Imba was predeceased by her parents and eight siblings: Margaret Lindstrom, Hilda Crowdis, Sylvia Bynski, her twin sister Gudrun Margetts, Krisjan, Herman, Thelma and Tom.
Imba is survived by her children: Howard, Georgina (Wally), Tom (Connie), Robin (Jean), Stan (Nancy) and Herman (Ellen). She had 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She had numerous nieces and nephews.
Imba served in the Women’s Army Corp during WW2. There she met and married Elgin Phinney. She became a single parent at the age of 30 and raised her six children on her own with the love and care of the community. Imba worked many years at St. Joseph Hospital and the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, retiring in 1989.
Imba was a long time member of the Keewatin Legion and St. Andrew’s United Church. Imba was proud of her Icelandic Heritage. She was an incredible baker and shared her traditional recipes with the family. Imba was a wonderful community member, neighbour and friend to many.
A service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Wednesday, August 21st at 2:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow.
