Jackie passed away peacefully, with grace and dignity, at Lake of the Woods District Hospital on August 30, 2013.
Mom was born December 5, 1927 and spent her formative years in Winnipeg. Her love of Kenora and Lake of the Woods began as a young girl when she spent parts of her summer holidays at the family owned Kenricia Hotel and later at the Gray cottage on Coney Island.
It was in Kenora that Mom met Elsie Fregeau, who became her lifelong friend. Elsie introduced Jackie to her older brother, Victor Joseph Fregeau. Jackie and Vic fell in love and married on September 30, 1950.
Mom was predeceased by Vic in 1977, and by her son-in-law Duncan Norrie in 1992. Jackie mourned the loss of her most beloved sister, Dixie Bennett in December, 1999, and dear brother-in–law, Charlie Bennett six weeks later.
Mom was many things to many people, but in essence she was a mother, grandmother and most recently a great-grandmother. She loved her family deeply and was loved in return. We were so fortunate to have had her play such a significant role in all of our lives for such a long period of time.
God blessed us with memory, to cherish all the special moments we have shared with loved ones. Each of us has our own special memories of Mom. Many of them revolve around her treasured time at the family camp on Coney Island. Mom loved her summers at camp, an idyllic place to raise a large family. In later years, it served as a gathering place for Mom, her grandchildren and family members who had moved away. One and all were embraced by the glow of her beautiful smile and unconditional love – and told more than once to put on a lifejacket if you were going on the dock!
Mom will be lovingly remembered and never forgotten by Jim (Marnie), Sarah, Heather, Ben and Michelle, Sue (Bob), Trevor, Curtis (Katie), Keely and Brady, Neil (Charmaine), Kevin, Pam (Jaye), Paul, Sheila, Allison (Andy), Jennifer and Cameron, Tom, John (Maureen), Mac, Jackson and Jamieson, and Joe. Mom had a very special place in her heart for each of her Bennett nieces and nephews, even more so after Dixie and Charlie passed away.
Special thanks to Dr. J. Retson, Dr. J. Beveridge and the staff on 2nd east for their professional, kind and compassionate care of Mom, both throughout her illness and in her final days.
Donations in Jackie’s memory may be made to the Lake of the Wood District Hospital Foundation or the Lake of the Woods Community Regional Foundation (Library Fund).
A funeral mass will be held at Notre Dame du Portage Church on Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at Casey’s Minis – Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
