With heavy hearts we announce that On February 5, 2016 at 3:32 am we lost the bravest, most generous, kindest, loving and amazing Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother and , Great Gramma (the title she treasured the most) and friend, Janice Olson-Toth, at age 76.
Mom was born in Saskatchewan on May 18, 1939 to Arthur and Mildred Duke, moving to Keewatin Ontario when she was 13 years old. Starting at a young age mom worked many jobs in the service industry beginning with Queen’s Restaurant in Keewatin and “retiring” from JJ’s Store in LacLu. We say “retiring” lightly as mom never ever retired. After JJ’s closed mom went on to volunteer at several community events such as the Blood Donor Clinic, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Pellatt Committee, both the Kenora and Keewatin Legions, Relay for Life, Thursday night bingo, and anything else where she could lend a helping hand.
Mom loved to knit, crochet, garden, and gamble! Many a day you would find her and her besties Grace and Olive on bus tours to the casinos. Grace, Olive and the slots will miss her tremendously! Her Gardner house “family” will be missing her contagious laugh, her genuine wit and especially her expertise at crib night! Her perogies, meatballs and pickles were the best in town hands down, and as hard as we try we will never be able to replicate those recipes. The love and care she put into making them, especially for her family, cannot be replaced.
Her grandchildren were the light of her life, she made so many memories with all 21 of them as well as her 15 great grandchildren. From picking cucumbers with them, teaching them to knit, giving them her “gramma” talks and shaking her head at their shenanigans, laughing her ass off at them, protecting them, and being their best friend. She will miss them, but they will miss her more.
Mom will be overjoyed to reunite with her parents Arthur and Mildred Duke, first husband Charlie Olson, second husband Joe Toth, oldest son Bob Olson, sister Joan Heino, stepson Brad Toth and grandson Donald Roy.
Janice is survived by her siblings Donna and Joe Candelaria, Darlene Sutherland (Roy), and Doug and Judy Duke along with their families. They are missing their Matriarch so much already, and forever will.
Mom is survived by her children, Brian (Donna) Olson, Tony Olson, Brenda Olson, Liz Olson (Bill) and Hope Regaudie (Louis), her step children Polly, Jason, and Joanne.
Missing her to the moon and back are her grandkids Melanie, Spencer, Gavin, Stephan, Shonna, Kristen, Michael, Sarah, Lauren, Kathleen, Stephanie, Travis, Keila, Ben, Max, Zach, Danielle, Justin, Alyssa, Ryan and Richard. Along with her 15 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Thank you immensely to the Palliative Care Unit, the special nurses, Taff, Jess, Char, Chris, Allan, Dr.’s Workman and Beveridge for all your care for our mom. She enjoyed each and everyone one of you.
Mom “we are everything we are because you loved us”, we will miss and love you more than words can ever express and a day will not go by that we won’t think of you, and never a day will go by that we won’t miss you. You are our saviour, our matriarch, our world. R.I.P you beautiful, beautiful person.
Flowers gratefully declined, donations can be made to the LOTW Palliative Care Unit, or one of your choice.
Service will be held at the Kenora Legion on Wednesday February 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Luncheon served and open mic. So please bring all of your heartfelt words, your funny stories and your love for Janice Olson-Toth.
