August 13, 1915 – February 3, 2013
Jessie Ida Hanson passed away peacefully at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at age 97.
She is survived and sadly missed by her sisters Anne (Leo) Trelinski of Kenora and Rita (Leonard) Carlson of Abbotsford, BC. Also missing Aunt Jess and remembering her with love are her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, her sister-in-law Margaret Boucha, her cousin Marie Florez, all her relatives in the extended Boucha family, her Hanson relatives in BC, the Nybergs in Kenora and many other good friends.
Jess was predeceased by her husband Bertil Hanson in September 2010. She was also predeceased by her first husband Alfred Grandy, her parents William Allan and Martha Boucha, sisters Mary (Albert) Henley and Rose (Olof) Johnson, brothers Charles, William Henry (Mike), Alfred (Fred), Walter (Wally) and Thomas Boucha, and other close and special family members.
Jess was born August 13, 1915 at French Portage on Lake of the Woods. She grew up at French Portage and married Alfred Grandy in 1935. They worked at different places on the lake, usually guiding and fishing and often living in their houseboat. During the Second World War they built a home for themselves at French Portage and when the war ended they bought a commercial fishing license and lived nearby on McPherson Island. They moved to Kenora when Alfred became ill and he passed away in 1969. Jess married Bert in 1970 and they enjoyed 40 wonderful years together. They lived at Shoal Lake where he had a commercial fishery and in 1987 when they retired they were among the first residents to move into Benedickson Court in Kenora.
Jess kept herself busy with crocheting, knitting, cooking and baking. She especially enjoyed making her big Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners every year. She also stayed in touch with lots of relatives and she was always the one to go to for the latest family news. She was young at heart and we loved her sense of humour and her laugh, her amazing memory, and the stories she told about growing up on the lake and about her early life. Aunt Jess has quietly passed into the next life now and she’s at peace and reunited with her loved ones. We love you and we miss you.
We would like to express our gratitude to the nurses in ICU and on the 3rd floor for their compassionate care during the five days Jess was in the hospital. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Lake of the Woods Cemetery in the summer.
