December 15, 1934 – November 28, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Joan Marilyn Carlson is announcing her untimely passing on Nov 28 2023.
She was predeceased by her father and mother, George and Muriel Ward, stepfather Frank Fowles and sister Judy Cox.
Survived by husband Charlie Carlson and sons Kim (Lynn), Kris (Diane), Russ, Ralph (Sandie), six grandchildren Tasha (Jason), Ange (Tyler), Brittney (Rob) Bryce, Jonathan (Natalie), Kendra (Dylan), seven great grandchildren Brook-Lynn (Davis), Kennedy, Kash, Layne, Sunna, Ayla and Hudson. She will be missed by many other family members and friends including brother-in-law Jim Cox (late Judy) and family and Bill Gow and family.
She married Charlie Carlson July 11, 1953 and they were together for seventy years raising four sons all remaining lifetime residents in Kenora. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and most of all she loved her family, instilling in her sons strong values that have served them well.
Many summer evenings were spent at the local baseball diamonds being actively involved playing women’s softball and during the winter months an accomplished curler.
She could always be found amongst her flowers and gardening, many hours were spent outside with her grandchildren following her between the rows. Her garden was the envy of the neighbourhood.
She cared deeply for neighbours and friends. She did this not out of obligation but because of who she was.
She was the first to offer help. Both her and Charlie enjoyed regularly volunteering at Pinecrest at the tuck shop, seeing old friends and sharing warm memories.
Our family gathered around her Christmas tree every year. The love and laughter will always be in our memories.
Despite her issues with mobility later in life, she had a huge presence, a big heart and managed without complaint. She always thought of others before herself and smiled through her pain.
A memorial service to honour Joan will be for immediate family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations in support of Pinecrest Home for the Aged – Kenora.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone,
for apart of us went with you.
You will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Your loving family
