Lawrence Harvey Cottam
September 25, 1929 – July 24, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Lawrence Cottam announce his passing on Tuesday July 24th, 2018 at the Kenora District Hospital with family at his side.
Dad was born in Rainy River Ontario on September 25th, 1929 to Harvey and Elsie Cottam
At a very young age Dad began guiding on Lake of the Woods and his expertise was sought after by many whether it be walleye, muskie or trout. Lawrence met the love of his life Evelyn; they were married on April 20th, 1949 and lived in Nestor Falls until moving to Kenora in 1996. His full-time job was as patrolman for the Ontario Department of Highways but he continued to guide on weekends and on days off. Dad loved to fish and over the years made countless friends with the parties he guided. Dad retired from the Highway allowing him to spend more time on the lake with Evelyn, their children and grandchildren. The shore lunches were the best!
Dad loved curling, whether watching it on TV or playing in his men’s league in Keewatin. Countless hours were spent at the curling club in Nestor Falls.
Dad was a volunteer Fire Chief for many years at the Nestor Falls Fire Department, and with the Ambulance Service. He also enjoyed the many hours he spent volunteering at the CP Rail Roaders Museum, meeting people, giving tours and hanging the Christmas lights of the train.
Lawrence is survived by his brother Stan Cottam, daughters Beverly (Bob) Kraemer, Jan Rae (Wayne) Knutson, son Larry (Judy) Cottam,
grandchildren Rob, Dan, Meghan, Jillian and Garret and 8 Great-Grandchildren.
Sadly, the love of Dad’s life, Evelyn, passed away on June 22, 2018. Mom and Dad, you are together once again. If there’s a fishing hole in Heaven, no doubt you will find the spot where the big ones are.
A celebration of life for Mom and Dad was held on July 30th. Thank you to all who were able to attend and to those who were with us in Prayer. Special thanks to Pastor Robert Wittmeier for his care and compassion. Thank you to the staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for the exceptional care that they provided to Dad.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation.
