It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Marlene McKie at Lake of the Woods District Hospital on February 20, 2021, with family by her side. Marlene was born and raise in Kenora, Ontario on January 30, 1951.
Marlene is predeceased by her father Francis, and partner Mel Rapinda.
Left to mourn her loss, Marlene is survived by her mother Olive Derouin, son Lorne Hayka, brother Brian (Donna) Derouin, sister Glenda (Andy) Stanley. Marlene is also survived by her nephews Jason (Jayme) Derouin, Marc (Sherrie) Derouin, nieces Lauren (Kyle) Mosionier and Nikki (Ashton) Faulds. She is also survived by her grandson Dalton and many great nieces and nephews. Marlene is also survived by the Rapinda family: Jeff (Michelle) Rapinda, Dan (Bev) Rapinda and Carrie (Andrew) Johnson, as well as good friends Dr. Jim Beveridge, Penny Norris, Leslie Dixon, Dave Mckie (Wanda), Doreen and Tom Bray, Claudia Brydges, and Alice and Dennis O’Sullivan.
Marlene worked at Pinecrest for 36 years. She started as a Nurse’s Aide then got her Gerontology/Activation Degree and moved to the Activation Department where she had the opportunity to work closely with the residents on daily exercises. She got to know and love many of the residents at Pinecrest and enjoyed talking to them, shopping with them, as well as having lunch with them. Marlene made many lifetime friends with her coworkers. Marlene and her first husband Dave McKie worked at Pinecrest together and were married for many years. They shared a love of darts, their dog Sandy, and going out to camp. After they separated, they still remained close friends.
Marlene always brought a smile to any room with her infectious laugh and was always up for a trip to Shooting Star with her mom and friends. Even when Marlene was unable to travel, she still played games online with the many friends she had made over the years.
She lived with her long-time partner Mel on the Winnipeg River which she loved so much. Their home was always a welcoming place for friends, family, and neighbours.
Marlene was so incredibly lucky to have been loved by so many throughout her life. She always made friends wherever she went. Her big personality will be missed.
The family would like to thank the nurses and palliative care staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital along with Dr. Workman.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marlene’s memory to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital – Chemotherapy Department or to a charity of one’s choice.
