On Wednesday March 10, 2021, Mary Derewianko passed away peacefully at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora.
Beloved wife of the late Alexander Derewianko, loving mother of Mark (Dianne), David (Filippina), and late infant son John.
Cherished Baba of Alex and Mikayla, Survived by dear sister Stella Hillis, and late brother Harry Chmeliuk (Leatrice). She will be remembered fondly by nieces, nephews and friends.
Mary lived all her life in Kenora except for a short time when she lived and worked in Toronto. Although she enjoyed the excitement of the big city life she preferred the tranquil lifestyle that Kenora offered. Later on she married her husband Alexander (Axel) and raised two sons. She loved animals, especially dogs and the deer that ate from her crab apple tree. She enjoyed doing crosswords, watching and answering the questions on Jeopardy and collecting recipes. She had a gentle nature, sharp wit and an incredible memory. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and shared stories and traditions (Easter egg designs) with her grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Aunt Stella and Cousin Dan for all of their support that they gave Mary over the years. A thank you to the nurses and doctors at the LWDH. Throughout her life Mary made donations to many charities, therefore as an expression of sympathy donations may be made in memory of Mary to charities of your choice.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, funeral services and interment will take place at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cemetery at a later date.
