Maxine Milsom

March 23, 1942-October 30, 2023

Peacefully, surrounded and held by her loving family, Maxine went to be with her lord and saviour Jesus.

Maxine Rose McConnell was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and spent her early years in Lower Hutt, Wellington. She was the third of four children and grew up in beautiful South Island, spending summers in central Otago. She moved to Dunedin to train as a nurse, and worked in Auckland before travelling all the way to Kenora, Ontario, Canada in 1965, where she worked as a paediatric nurse at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

Following this were nursing jobs in Ponoka, Alberta, and Dryden, Ontario, finally settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She married Ray Milsom, originally from Kenora, on April 17, 1971 at St Alban’s church in Kenora. They had 2 daughters, Tara and Shannon, with whom they spent their summers on the water, renting cabins every summer at Redden’s Camp on Longbow Lake, going to Grand Beach, and finally buying their own cottage on Bigstone Bay.

Maxine retired from nursing around 1998, after 23 years working at Victoria General Hospital. Maxine spent her retirement years enjoying Lake of the Woods, going on road trips to California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington state, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, and then watching her beloved granddaughters grow. She most loved spending summer days cruising Lake of the Woods on her and Ray’s pontoon boat.

She is predeceased by her mother Elaine, father Walter, sister Adrienne, and brothers, Billy and Lee, as well as her mother-in-law Marjorie and father-in-law Victor. She is survived by her devoted husband Ray and daughter Tara of Kenora, and daughter Shannon (Oscar), and grandchildren Claudia and Cara, of Winnipeg. She will be missed by many including a niece and 2 nephews, along with other close family and friends in Winnipeg and Kenora.

Despite Maxine’s issues with her mobility, she had a huge presence, a big heart and managed without complaint. It was her opinion that everyone sought, and she was the boss. But she always thought of others before herself, and smiled through her pain. She was a beloved and precious nana and poured her love out on her granddaughters in every way she could.

Maxine loved Jesus and knew that she would see him in Heaven. While she loved life, she knew the joy and healing that awaited her in Heaven. The hole she left is enormous, but we know this is only a temporary separation.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00am at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery with a Celebration of Life to follow at Grand View Villa from 12:00 - 3:00 pm.
