With his family by his side, Mervin McLean of Kenora, Ontario passed away peacefully on March 9, 2011 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital at the age of 89 years.
He leaves to mourn, his wife Kathleen of 55 years; daughters Deb and husband Brian Pekarchuk; Marnie and husband Ken Schuster; grandchildren Adam, Jake, and Katie Schuster; Sisters Wilma Bowen, Eloise Lawrence, Polly and Wayne Marshall, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Della Maude McLean of Drayton Ontario; his sisters Marj (Gord) Honsinger, Eleanor (Gord) Jones, Brother in law Bill Lawrence, his beloved son Brent McLean and his best friend Sam North.
Merv was born in Drayton, Ontario on June 6th, 1921, the only son in a family of five daughters. He spent his formative years in Southern Ontario, but was always drawn to the north. Merv married his wife, Kathleen, in Toronto where they decided it was time to start a family. He began his career with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario in 1965. After years of employment in several communities in Southern Ontario, his dream of moving to the north was fulfilled.
Merv was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family and friends in the beautiful surrounding area. His gregarious nature and passion for life attracted many lifelong friends. Upon his retirement in 1986, he and Kathleen settled into their cottage at Crow Lake. There, they enjoyed the joy of family, gardening, fishing from the dock, the beauty of many sunsets, happy hour on the deck, and moonlit pontoon boat rides. Merv’s remaining years were spent living in Kenora close to his family. His unique sense of humour will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Merv’s requests were immediate cremation and no formal service. His family will gather at a later date in a celebration of his life.
Merv’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Sven (Buzz) Pedersen and the many nurses, staff members, palliative care unit staff at the lake of the Woods District Hospital and the emergency service personnel for their wonderful care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation – laboratory would be gratefully accepted.
We love you and we will miss you.
