“Mizhakii Binesii” Mooz Ndootem
June 10, 1948 – March 13, 2026
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, uncle and friend Richard David Green of Shoal Lake #40.
Richard passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the age of 77.
He leaves behind his loving wife Elsie Green of 19 years. His siblings Carol Niermann, Terry Greene, Billy-Joe Green, Valerie Wood, Doug Green and Tim Sakakeep. His children Bronson, Janelle, Kirk and Sierra along with their mother Judy Major who was there by her children’s side. As well as his sons Jason Green and Derek Abraham. His stepchildren Karen (Kert), Gary (Crystal), and Jennifer (Bob). His grandchildren Chevonne, Curtis, Blake, Jake, Morgan, Isaiah, Amanda, Shannon, Maybelline and Katelyn. And many other grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Richard is predeceased by his father David “Cournoyer” Green, his mother Helen Green (nee. Ross), sister Jeannie Martin, his sons James Skead, Clayton Crowe and his daughter Nadine Green.
Richard was a very good guitarist as a youngster and was heavily inspired by Dad David Green’s country singing and thick guitar accompaniment. Encouraging his siblings to pursue the instrument with passion.
He was a devoted Elvis fan and for a period of his life he did an Elvis impersonation with hilarious success. He was also an avid Montreal Canadiens fan.
Richard shared his knowledge with humility and purpose, carrying the history of his family and community from Treaty No. 3 territory. Grounded in the teachings of governance, treaty rights, and lived experience, he was a strong and steady voice for his people.
He never hesitated to speak truth, advocate for survivors and their families, or sit at tables where difficult conversations were needed. A survivor of the Indian Residential School system, Richard traveled wherever his voice was needed, ensuring survivors were heard, honored, and never forgotten.
Known for his powerful storytelling, sharp humor, and expressive presence, he had a gift for bringing people together and creating space for both learning and healing.
His work with the Ki Gami Kamin “We Will Find” project, and alongside the communities of Shoal Lake #40, Animakee Wa Zhing #37, and Iskatewizaagegan #39, reflects his lifelong commitment to truth, governance, and the well-being of his people.
Richard’s presence brought comfort, courage, and clarity. He showed up — to every meeting, every gathering, every circle — understanding that presence and consistency are essential to healing.
He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, strength, and compassion. His teachings, his laughter, and his unwavering commitment to truth and healing will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
The family would like to say Miigwetch (Thank-you) to his primary Dr. Jeff Gustafson, Health Access Centre and to Dr. Lastix, Intensive Care Unit and Palliative Care staff at the La Verendrye General Hospital, Shoal Lake #40, Animakee Wa Zhing, Kenora Super 8, Northridge Funeral Home and Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre.
