Richard “Gus” Delano Haney left us unexpectedly on Dec. 23rd, 2025 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital. He was 80 years young. The family is deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden death. Ricky was born in Kenora, Ontario on June 20th,1945 to Lloyd and Ada Haney.
Ricks heart was always in the bush. An avid outdoorsman, who spent his most favorite days with family and friends fishing, camping, and hunting up the English River Rd. He was a devoted family, man who shared his love and wisdom for the outdoors with anyone lucky enough to join him. Many people would say, ”Rick was a big guy, with a big heart, who’s gentle soul radiated warmth to those fortunate enough to meet him”.
Like a true “Haney”, Rick spent his spare time roaming the streets and roads of Kenora and Jaffrey Melick. He often took time to stop for a coffee break with his buddies and nephews at Kenora Truck Service, and Haney Construction.
Most of Ricks working career was spent at Keewatin Patricia School Board, which he retired from in 1999 after 25 years of service. He then joined his wife Marybelle at their family business, Lakeside Laundromat, for close to 20 years until they sold it in 2006.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 54 years, Marybelle. His “Kiddo” Carolyn, and her husband Kyle. Rick was from a family of eleven children, who grew up on the family farm on Beggs Rd. He is survived by siblings; Tom (Brenda), Gerry, Cecil (Lorna), and Keith. As well as sister in laws Jeanette, Emily, Esther, and their families. He was also survived by Marybelle’s brother Roy (Dallas) McIntyre, sister Barbara Heino, and sister-in-law Aline McIntyre and their families.
Rick always said, “have a party when I go”. In fulfillment of his wish, please join us, along with your best memory or pic to celebrate Rick’s life on Saturday January 24th, 2026 at 11:00am at the Ukrainian Hall, 509 4th St. North, Kenora. With a luncheon to follow. Wearing your favourite plaid flannel shirts, jeans, and hat are encouraged.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Emergency Department for their excellent comfort and care. In lieu of flowers, please kindly donate on behalf of Rick to Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation.
