Left to cherish his memory are his brother Edmond of Winnipeg and Sister Josepha (Margery) a member of the Springfield Franciscan Sisters of Springfield, Illinois. He is also survived by his daughter Karen Pirie of Fort Frances (grandchildren Myles, Ian and Jenna); son Dr. Daniel Schaeffer of Winnipeg (grandchildren Jasmine, Justin and Victoria.)
Dick was predeceased by his parents Joseph Andrew and Frances (Miller); sisters Vivienne and Evelyn; his wife Betty and his first wife Bernice (Lesy) and mother of his children.
Dick was an active businessman owning and founding businesses in Kenora and Manitoba. He purchased the Kenricia Kabin Kourt (Anchor Inn) in 1957 and operated it until 1979 when he sold it and moved back to Manitoba where he farmed, sold real estate and operated a hotel in Morden until he returned to Kenora and built a retirement home on the lake just south of Welcome Channel.
Dick enjoyed moose hunting and fishing and often reminisced about adventures on Lake of the Woods with his buddies Max Foster, John Scribilo, Mel Wartig and others.
He gave freely of his time to volunteer organizations in the community but especially his church and the Knights of Columbus holding many offices during his sixty-six years of membership. The largest challenge that Dick and Betty took on was the building of The Grandview Villa in Kenora. They were an integral part of the committee that struggled for four and a half years to complete this building and lived there for the past eleven years enjoying the fruits of their labor. Villa residents continue to be grateful for their unrelenting dedication.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Workman, Dr. Wiebe and hospital staff and everyone at CCAC for all of the care and support over the years.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Notre Dame du Portage church at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Rudy Manaloto officiating followed by a luncheon provided by the Knights of Columbus in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
