With love and much sadness, we share the passing of Roy Coltman on Monday, February 17, 2020. Roy leaves behind his son, David (Kathy), daughter, Karen (Glenn), grandchildren, Adam (Val), Brittany (Zach), Tamara (JP) and great grandchildren, Kennadie, Asher, Everett, Rylie, Octavia and Nolan. Roy also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Leif (Anita) and nephews, Neil, Chris, Michael and nieces, Shelley and Tania. Roy is predeceased by his parents, Bill and Clara Coltman and his loving wife, Greta.
Roy was born in Souris, Manitoba on August 18, 1927 where he spent his childhood years before moving to Kenora. Roy worked for CP Rail as a Fireman, Engineer and instructor until his retirement in 1985.
Roy and Greta were married in Kenora on December 12, 1951. Roy’s commitment to his wife and family was ever-present. He never missed a call from the railroad and always made sure his family’s needs were met. Roy loved and was very proud of his home and the work he did to make it his “castle.” His biggest enjoyment was being on the Lake of the Woods. He and Greta would travel miles down the lake often enjoying an overnight stay at Oak Island. He took great pleasure bringing Greta to her “special island” and watching her swim. Roy also enjoyed golfing and curling and could always be seen walking at the Rec Center. Roy and Greta travelled to many different locations in their retirement as Roy loved to study maps of the world and explore.
Roy was a lifelong learner and a self-made man. He taught his family the importance of hard work and adventure. His favorite saying was “You are only passing through this world so enjoy.”
The last few years Roy battled cancer but never let it get him down. He always had jokes for the nurses and kept a positive attitude. Thank you to the nurses and doctors at Lake of the Woods District Hospital and a special thank you to the nurses in the chemo department.
We are blessed knowing he is now with the love of his life. They will both continue to watch over their family as they hold hands and dance to their favorite music.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital appreciated. Memorial Celebration to follow this summer.
