Our mom was known for being loving, nurturing, adventurous, full of ‘Sandyisms’, an amazing listener and had an open door to all who knew her. She loved her family with every ‘fiber of her being and more than life itself’ as she would say often.
Mom was born in Kenora, Ontario Canada on February 11, 1943 to the late Maurice and Vera Rivers. She met and married our dad, William Fonger (who predeceased her in 1986). Soon after, they moved to the United States to grow our family. After dad passed, she returned to Canada where she was surrounded by dear friends and family. After being a stay-at-home mom for over 20 years, she volunteered at the Literacy Society in Kenora and took classes to rebuild her clerical skills. Proudly, she worked until retirement for the Ministry of the Attorney General in the Victim Witness Program. She made many lifelong friendships throughout her 10 years of dedication working with victims of domestic violence. During the winter months, she always enjoyed heading to California to spend time with family and visit many of her favorite places such as Carmel, Monterey and San Francisco to name a few. She loved traveling, spending time at the beach, was an avid reader and had multiple hobbies such as knitting, sewing and working on puzzles. More than anything, her love of family was her greatest joy.
Mom is survived by: her children, Bill (Dana) Fonger, Sam (Terry) Traub and Riley (Chayla) Fonger. Grandchildren: Corey (April), Shyla (Dan), Jordan, Tyler (Lisa), Trevor (Tiffany), Alexis (Dre) and her youngest grandson, Gaige. Great grands: Wesley, Runa, Astraea, Dylan, Max, Kinley, Maci and newest great granddaughter Amiyah. Her brother Jim (Sue) Rivers along with beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mom is predeceased by her husband William, her parents Maurice & Vera Rivers and her son-in-law Terry Traub who all lovingly welcomed her home after her courageous battle with Cancer.
We want to thank everyone for their prayers, words of comfort, support and love during such an impossible time. We plan to have a graveside interment and a Celebration of Life this upcoming summer when friends and family are able to join us. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to any Cancer Society of your choosing.
