A great warrior has been called home and has joined our beloved ancestors. “Ogiimas” or “Chingwaageezhik” or “Stephen Powassin”, passed away peacefully in his home of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation on December 8, 2025 with family by his side. Stephen is predeceased by his mother, Lorraine Powassin, his daughter Alee Powassin, his son, Kyle Meekis, and numerous uncles, aunties, and cousins. He is survived by his father, Steve Skead, Rachel Paypompee mother of his daughters Delaney Powassin and Datrene Paypompee, his precious grandchildren Hayden and Jackson, Mika, Ivy, Zane and Michael, his siblings Stephanie Skead, Shiela Meekis, Warren Skead (Barbara), Vanessa Skead (Kamala), Phoebe Powassin, Ferguson Powassin, Jonathon Powassin, and Wade Skead, and so many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was so loved and will be profoundly missed by the medical staff in Wauzhushk Onigum where he was employed for over a decade as well as the community that he was so involved with, as he shared his knowledge of hunting, trapping, and fishing. Stephen was a precious son, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend and he touched the lives of so many with his sense of humor, warmth, creativity, curiosity, and outgoing nature. Stephen was a generous man and had to ability to connect with just about anyone. He had a rare gift of building connection wherever he found himself.
Stephen loved spending time with his grandchildren, Hayden and Jackson, whether that was travelling to different cities to explore new adventures, or staying close to home going to the movies or out for a bite to eat. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and knew the lake very well. He loved smoking fish for elders in various communities and was famous for his fish fritters. Stephen was a great father to his 4 children and loved spending his time, and money, on his 6-grandchildren. He loved his family and gave the shirt off his back many times to help anyone that needed help.
Stephen was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was one marked by laughter, compassion, and unwavering love for his siblings and cousins. His sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose loves were touched by his kindness.
A gathering to honor and celebrate the life of Ogiimaas, will commence on Friday, December 12, 2025 at noon, with a traditional service to follow on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 10:00am at the Golden Eagle Bingo Hall.
Pallbearers will be Lil Joe Seymour, Dean Lavand, Todd Powassin, Curtis Powassin, Luke Powassin, Norbert Powassin, Clayton Skead and Jeremiah McDonald.
Honorary pallbearers are Wade Skead, Jonathon Powassin, Ferguson Powassin and Tim McLeod.
