July 5, 1927 – May 29, 2017
Surrounded with love and support. Sugar passed away peacefully on May 29, 2017. He is survived by Florence his lifelong companion of 68 years, wife, teammate and mother to their children. Cherishing his memory are son-in-law Dick Farenhorst and children Stephanie and James, daughter Beth Vaudry (John) and children Karen (Patrick), Mark, and Linnea, and son Bruce (Kerry-Dell) and children Ken (Stacey), and Michael (Megan), sister-in-laws, Pauline and Shirley, along with numerous extended family and friends. He was predeceased by daughter Jan, and grandson, David, siblings Mona (Buster), Peter (Roberta), Gordie (Betty), Spike, Murray (Nora), Arlene (Russell), and Sam.
He was born ‘at a very early age’ in Ignace, Ontario on July 5, 1927 to Fanny and Peter Robertson. Sugar moved to Kenora with his family leaving behind the "one room schoolhouse" to attend Central Public School. On the corner of First and Ninth he and his brothers thrived playing horse puckey and hockey at Central Rink. His passion grew for the game! This led to team travels from the age of 16 with the San Francisco league, to farm team Kansas City Playmors (Chicago Blackhawks), to Jonquiere Quebec, Pembroke, and finally back home to be part of the Thistles who won the Western Canadian Intermediate Championship (1952-1953).This win led to the team's memorable seven week Japan tour.
He came home, settled, and continued adding to the family while working first for the CPR, and then in 1955 switching to his life-long" career as a journeyman lineman for the town of Kenora. His coworkers became friends for life. Sports continued to play an important role in his life as he enjoyed baseball, curling, golf and hockey and all the friendships that came with sports. He had a passion for the outdoors and spent a number of years at the camp he and Florence built enjoying hunting, fishing and family time.
Throughout all his years, his blue-eyes flashed with humour, goodwill, love, and mischief to be teased by him was to be loved by him. He thrived catching others off- guard with his quick wit but was also one who could share in serious discussions. He was a Mason, a life-long member of Knox United Church and strong support for his friends and family.
Thank you to Dr. Diamond who went above and beyond for Sugar. Additional thanks for the compassion and care of the attending physicians and nurses on 2nd East. Memorial service will be held at Knox United Church on Friday June 2, 2017 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Lake of the Wood District Hospital, The Canadian Cancer Society, or Knox United Church.
