Violet Gotts “Auntie Vi”, a resident of Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home, passed away on August 12, 2010 at her residence.
She was predeceased by her father Harry Gotts, mother Ruby Johns, brothers: Leonard Johns, Burt Johns, and Earnest Johns, sisters-in- law: Eva Johns, Babs Johns, and Dorothy Johns, brother-in-law Bill Robinson and nephew Bill Whitting.
Auntie Vi immigrated to Canada in 1929 at the age of 22.
Violet decided to join the woman’s division of the RCAF, enlisting in Winnipeg on January 9, 1942, then to Toronto and Guelph for training. March 1942 she was posted to Ottawa and sent overseas in 1943 to No. 6 Bomber Command Yorks. She became head cook in the officers’ mess. She was allowed a visit home before she left for England.
Auntie Vi worked at Linklater’s store, Ella Lynn’s and Adrian’s prior to opening her own store, The Wool Shop, in the Powell block of Keewatin and will be remembered as the Wool Shop Lady.
She is remembered by her loving family, brother Frank Johns, sister Win Robinson, several nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews in England, niece Darlene Thompson (Les), great nephews Len and John (Natalie) Thompson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, niece Joanne Whitting, nephew Burt Johns and families of B.C. and Dereck and Jenny of Australia, as well as loved ones Doreen and Joe Belair and families.
A Memorial Service for Violet will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. James’ Anglican Church in Keewatin with Arch Bishop David Ashdown officiating.
The family would like to thank the staff of Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home for their loving care of Auntie Vi.
