Dorothy Darline (Spencer) Griffith was born June 30, 1916 in Neola, Iowa to Alexander Marshall and Hazel Margaret (Whitney) Spencer. She moved to Kimball County when she was three years old, later moving to Cheyenne County where she grew to adulthood. She graduated from Potter High School and went on to get her teacher’s certificate at Chadron State Teachers College. She taught school in the Sidney Draw area and the Dix, NE area for approximately six years. She resided at the Harry Griffith residence whose son, Lester was to become her husband. Dorothy and Lester were married in Laramie, WY on June 3, 1939 because the “schoolmarm” was not supposed to be married. They had been married 70 years when Lester passed away on January 23, 2010.
Dorothy and Lester spent their retirement years traveling the United States and wintering in Texas. She could tell you the names of most wild flowers along their travels. Some of her favorite travel experiences were traveling with her daughters, especially the New England fall leaves tour, into Mexico and a trip to Australia. She loved to take her grandchildren on camping trips. She also loved having the other family members bring their campers and all go camping together. One of the major highlights of these trips was (A Big Breakfast) where almost any aspect of breakfast was served.
