Ronald J. Scott, 85, of Kimball, died at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kimball with Father James Joseph officiating. Burial will follow in the Kimball Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Christian Wake service at 6:00 p.m. Friends may visit www.cantrellfh.com to view Ron’s Tribute Wall and leave condolences for the family. Memorials have been established to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or Kimball Health Services Foundation. The services for Ron have been entrusted to the Cantrell Funeral Home.
Ron was born on March 7, 1930 at Whiteside County, Illinois to Clyde and Edna (Schroeder) Scott. He enlisted in the US Army in 1948 and graduated from Mendota Township High School in 1949. He re-enlisted into US Air Force in 1949. While in the service he attended several service schools, served in Korea in 1952-1953 and was honorably discharged in 1954. He married Dora Lee Staab at St. Joseph’s Church in Kimball, NE in 1950. They lived in Wyoming, California, Texas, Nebraska, Illinois, Colorado, South Carolina, and New York before returning to Kimball after he retired in 1995. During these 45 years he became a very active member of the Catholic Church where he was a member of a Catholic School Board and a Eucharistic Minister. He was a Cub, Boy Scout leader and a Civil Air Patrol Leader; a Little League Coach; member of AMVETS, the VFW and the American Legion. After he retired he was also a member of the Kimball Rotary Club and the Kimball Lions Club. Ron worked all his life starting at the age of seven as a part time laborer and clerk until he entered military service. After he was discharged from military service he was a Guard at the old Sioux Ordinance Depot in Sidney. He was a truck driver, roughneck and derrick hand in the Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming Oil Fields. He then spent the next 38 years working as a Claims Adjuster, Claims Supervisor and Claims Manager. After he retired and his wife of 47 years passed away Ron accepted the position of “Kimball County Veterans Service Officer”. While he was an Adjuster he completed LaSalle Extension University’s Course in “Law for the Claims man” and received an Associate Law Degree. During his lifetime Ron taught Property Insurance at the Denver CO University, assisted the Colorado Insurance Department in implementing its Adjuster License Law, assisted the South Carolina Insurance Department in implementing its No- Fault Insurance Law, initiated a fee schedule for insurance defense attorneys, initiated a mobile glass replacement program, assisted the State of New York in changing its Contributory Negligence Law to a Comparative Negligence Law. Ron was devoted to his family and church. Even though he was confirmed in the German Luther Church as a youth he became a Catholic Convert shortly after he married and was confirmed into the Catholic Church while serving in Korea. He was a Eucharistic Minister of the Catholic Church in Freeport, IL, Joliet, IL, Summersville, SC, Syracuse, NY and Kimball, NE. Ron and his wife were Sunday School Teachers in Syracuse, NY. While he lived in Syracuse Ron studied two years to become a Diaconate in the Catholic Church. He loved serving and assisting all those he came into contact with.
Ron is survived by: Three sons Ronald J Scott, Jr. and his wife Mary MacIsaac of Monument, CO, Randall Clyde Scott and his wife Marasee Somnuk of Martinez, GA and Richard Charles Scott and his wife Sharon Sharp of Syracuse, NY. Ron has three grandsons and three granddaughters, nine great grandsons, one great granddaughter and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife Dora Lee, parents, step Father Christopher Funk, sisters Phyllis (John) DelHotel, Shirley (Edwin) Bank, Norma Jean DeLao, and niece Lydia Bank.
