Alma's journey began in Weber City, VA, where she cultivated a spirit of compassion and service. She pursued her dreams, graduating from nursing school in 1953 as an RN, all while carrying the joy of impending motherhood. Her professional odyssey commenced at Holston Valley Medical Center, where she graced the maternity ward and the ER with her expertise and empathy. Later, she lent her skills to Holston Defense's medical department before finding a lasting home at Eastman Kodak, where she dedicated herself for over 37 years until her retirement in 1993. Alma's devotion endeared her to colleagues and patients alike, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
It was amidst the corridors of Eastman Kodak that Alma's heart found its match in her beloved husband and confidant, Eddie Martin. Together, they wove a tapestry of love and companionship that spanned over five decades, a testament to their enduring bond.
Alma's legacy is not just in her professional achievements but in the hearts of her family.
She was preceded in death by her son Mark Wood; brothers Conor Peters, Charles Peters, and MJ Peters; and sisters Nina Quillen and Mildred Catron.
She leaves behind her daughter Martha Wood and decades-long boyfriend Steve Clark, son David Wood and wife Sandra, grandson KC Bartley and his wife Emily and great-granddaughters Hailey and Taylor Bartley, granddaughter Carrie Glover and her husband Rob Glover, grandsons Luke Wood and Ryan Wood, brother Winston Peters, sister Mary Ann Poling and her husband Gary, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A debt of gratitude is owed to Emily Bartley and Carrie Glover for their unwavering compassion and tenderness during Alma's journey's end. A special thank you is also owed for the compassion and care given by Deshea Fields with Amedisys Care.
