Betty Lee Marshall Harris, age 90, of Kingsport, TN, went home to be with her heavenly father on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on October 24, 1935, the daughter of the late Gayton Maynard and Eva Pearl Franklin Marshall, of Montezuma, NC. Betty was a devoted woman who cherished her faith in the Lord, her family, and the church community. As a founding member of Tri-Cities Baptist Church, she played a significant role in the church's early development. Betty passionately contributed her musical talents by singing in the choir and dedicated herself to teaching Sunday School for elementary-aged children for many years. Some of her students went on to pursue careers as pastors, a testament to her impactful teaching and mentorship. In addition to her work at Tri-Cities, Betty actively served in various Baptist churches throughout her life, often working alongside her husband, Bob, as they devoted themselves to music ministry together at several area churches. Betty also sang and became the sound tech for their family’s group called, “The Happy Harris Family,” always ensuring that their performances ran seamlessly. Traveling was another passion for Betty and Bob, as they embraced every opportunity to explore new places.
Their adventures took them from the majestic waterfalls of California - where they spent time exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Yosemite National Park to distant lands like Japan - where they visited their daughter who was serving as a journeyman missionary. It was in Japan that Betty developed a deep affection for the local culture and the people, further expanding her understanding and appreciation of God’s work across the globe. A natural servant, Betty loved to have friends and family over for dinner, often creating warm and inviting gatherings that reflected her generous spirit. She found joy in simple pleasures, such as walking at Warriors Path State Park on Duck Island, where she and Bob enjoyed nature and each other’s company. They maintained an active lifestyle, and Betty was well known at her local gym doing Zumba into her 80’s, showcasing her vibrant energy. Betty experienced vision loss from a hereditary condition early in life making it very challenging to read. As a member and leader in Bible Study Fellowship, she persevered and spent hours daily studying God’s Word in order to be prepared to lead others. Through her numerous acts of service and encouraging spirit, Betty became a living testimony to many, exemplifying a life devoted to servanthood and love. She embraced her journey and completed her earthly race with grace, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and unwavering dedication.
Along with her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her brother: Gayton M. “Bud” Marshall, of Kingsport.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 69 years: Bob Vernon Harris; children: Dr. Lynne Harris Fish and husband Dr. Richard Fish, of Blythewood, SC and Holli Harris Hyatt and husband David Hyatt, of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Hannah Grace Hyatt, of Alexandria, VA and Hunter Benjamin Hyatt; sister-in-law: Gail Marshall; nieces: Kim Marshall, Deana Marshall, & Jada Bolden and husband Rev. David Bolden; along with many other family and friends who loved her dearly.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 12:00 noon – 1:30 pm at Tri-Cities Baptist Church. The funeral service to celebrate Betty’s life will follow at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Memories.
