

Born on October 18, 1939, in Wise County, VA, Bill was a distinguished individual whose life was marked by a commitment to family, faith, and a remarkable career. He graduated from John I Burton High School and went on to earn a degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1963.
Bill dedicated 29 years of his professional life as a Mechanical Engineer at Eastman, followed by an extended and fulfilling career with International Paper. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with the prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineers Frederick P. Smarro Award in 1997.
A loving and devoted husband, Bill celebrated 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Linda Johnson Maggard. Together, they built a life filled with love, joy, and enduring companionship. Bill is also survived by his three children: Teresa "Tese" Maggard Stephens (Scott), Latricia "Trish" Maggard Williams (Eugene), and William Neal Maggard (Jennifer).
His legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren: Jeremy Williams (Laura), Hunter Stephens (Abbie), Carly Williams, and great-grandchildren Ellie Williams, Emmie Stephens, Owen Stephens, and Murphie Jo Stephens. Bill is further survived by his sister, Phyllis Dorton.
A man of strong faith, Bill was an active member of Gideons International and Gravely Baptist Church. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in his youth and embraced numerous opportunities throughout his life to share his faith with others.
A private celebration of Bill's life was held at the family home, where friends and loved ones gathered to remember a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Gideons International, a cause that was dear to Bill's heart.
