

George Monroe Swisher, 82, of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. George was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Harold Monroe Swisher and Evelyn Swisher Nicolia. He was raised in Lancaster, Ohio, and spent most of his adult life in Cookeville and Kingsport, Tennessee.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 50 years, Linda, and his brother, Gene Swisher.
He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Swisher Harnetty (Patrick); grandchildren, Lauren and Christopher Harnetty; his brother, Richard Swisher (Judy); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
George graduated with the Class of ’67 from Ohio State University, earning a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to teach numerous engineering courses, author a textbook, and serve as Dean of Engineering at both Tennessee Tech University and Southern Illinois University. George was kind, thoughtful, and an enthusiastic educator. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Sunday family dinners, and watching sports. “Dr. G” was a devoted fan of both the Tennessee Vols and Ohio State football teams.
A small family graveside will be held on Saturday.
George supported many charities and always reached out to those in need. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank in Kingsport, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or United Way (www.uwaykpt.org).
