Gerald Avery Necessary

September 19, 1925December 25, 2019

Gerald Avery Necessary, 94, entered into the arms of Jesus during the morning hours of Wednesday (December 25, 2019). A precious Christmas gift, Gerald spent Jesus’s birthday face to face with his Lord and Savior who he loved and served most of his adult life. Gerald was born on September 19, 1925 in St. Charles, VA to the late Charles Litton & Nora Lena (Baird) Necessary.

Gerald unselfishly served our country in the United States Army during WWII. He retired from Eastman Chemical Company with more than 20 years of dedicated service. He was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for more than 60 years. In his spare time, Gerald enjoyed woodcarving and sitting on his front porch where he would be found praying and reading his Bible. Gerald was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, great great-grandfather, uncle, and friend; he will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Margaret (Holmes) Necessary; twin brother, Harold Necessary; sister, Thelma Redwine; and granddaughter, Monica Sheffey Alvarez.

Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Teresa Sheffey & husband Robert “Bo” and Brenda Robertson & husband Steven; sister-in-law, Vera Smith Everroad; seven grandchildren, Robert “Ed” Shefffey, Tobias Samuel Sheffey, Joseph Solomon Sheffey, Shalamar Black Summers, Michael Shane McGraw, Evan Robertson, and Hayley Robertson; 19 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday (December 29, 2019) from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Indian Springs Baptist Church (325 Hill Road Kingsport, TN 37664). Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Wayne Baker and Pastor Dave Phillips officiating.

Gerald will be entombed with his beloved wife Margaret on Monday (December 30, 2019) at noon in Mausoleum II at East Lawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Posts 3/265.

Gerald will be greatly missed. My favorite recent memory was when he had gotten his new flag pole, he was so proud of it. I shared with him more than once, he was my earthly example of how to be Christ like.

I always thought of Uncle Gerald as a good provider, a good husband to Aunt Margaret, and a good father to his children. Above and beyond that, he was an all around great guy. Friendly, happy and full of love. I'll miss him. And the world is minus one fantastic man.
