Harvey Shepherd, Sr., age 92 of Limestone, entered into the glories of Heaven on Monday, July 18, 2016. Harvey was born to the late George and Hazel Shepherd on June 5, 1924 in Cresaptown, Maryland. On November 1, 1942, Harvey married his most cherished friend, Dorothy Price, and after 68 years of a wonderful life together, she preceded him in death on October 26, 2010.
Harvey was a man of true character and he cherished his family and his country. He bravely fought in the skies over Europe during WW II where he flew 35 missions as a tail-gunner on a B17 Bomber. For his unselfish dedication to his country, Harvey received many great honors which included being the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the WW II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Harvey cherished his family and he loved every minute that he got to spend with them. He enjoyed the simple things in life and his family always knew that they could count on him.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Dorothy Shepherd; one son, John Lee Shepherd; one grandson, Scott Lee Shepherd; six brothers and six sisters. Left to cherish his memories and continue his legacy are his three sons, Edward Shepherd and wife Janice, James Shepherd and wife Leslie, and Harvey Shepherd Jr. and wife Brenda; one daughter, Connie Jean Gallagher and husband Robert; grandchildren, Kim Buchanan and husband William, Sarah Gallagher, David Joshua Shepherd and fiancé Jenny Johnson, Kristie Dawn Rogers and husband David, Tammy Lynn McCormik, Amy Michelle Carter and husband Brandon, Eric Matthew Shepherd, David Todd Shepherd, and Jason Daniel Shepherd, Sr.; and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 21, 2016 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the Chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm with the Military Chaplain officiating. There will be a Military Honor’s graveside service that will immediately follow in the Garden of Faith at East Lawn Memorial Park with Jonathan Humphrey, Jason Shepherd, Eric Shepherd, Todd Shepherd, and Josh Shepherd serving as pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 3/265.
