Helen Jo Christian, 90, was called to come home to Jesus Thursday night (April 16, 2020). Jo was born on November 12, 1929 in Duffield, VA to the late Emily Alice Hamilton Bowen and Echol Davis Bowen. She was their ninth of ten children.
She was married to Calvin Charles Dickens and had one son, Joel Charles Dickens. Jo was preceded in death by Charles in 1976. She remarried in 1991 to Charles Junior Christian. He preceded her in death in 2015.
Jo retired from Tennessee Eastman in the mid ‘80s after more than 30 years of service.
After retirement, Jo sought to fill her time as a Volunteer with the American Red Cross, American Legion Auxiliary, and at Indian Path Hospital. Jo served as an officer of these groups. She saw something that needed to be done and she did it, quietly and efficiently. After serving as Indian Path Volunteer Auxiliary President, Jo retired from Volunteer work at Indian Path Hospital in 2011 after actively working more than 25 years.
She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and Litz Manor Baptist Church where she served as secretary. She had a strong faith and loved Jesus.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Emily Alice Hamilton Bowen and Echol Davis Bowen; sisters, Mable Vicars, Lula Harris, Kate Jeter, Ann Carr, Rebecca Smith, and Ruth Trent; and younger brother, Arthur Manson Bowen. She is survived by her sisters, Maude Sproles and June Wilson; son, Joel Dickens & wife Tammy Dickens; grandchildren, Mikayla Foster and Gavin Dickens.
Jo will be laid to rest Tuesday, April 21st, 2020 at East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Faith with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Committal service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to the American Heart Association or organizations supporting healthcare workers. She spent many years supporting them and would want to help now.
