Jack Lewis
Jack Lewis, age 83 of Taylors, SC, formerly of Kingsport passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at the Veterans Medical Center, Anderson, SC.
Jack was born June 10, 1926 in Whitesburg, KY, to the late Roy F. and Mossie Smith Lewis. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, and received a B.S. degree in physics from the University of Kentucky. He began working for Tennessee Eastman Company in the Research Laboratories after one year of graduate study. He was a Research Associate and was instrumental in the development of gas chromatography at Tennessee Eastman Company and Eastman Kodak Company. He was a member of the American Chemical Society (serving as Chairman of the Northeast Tennessee Section, the American Society for Testing and Materials (serving on the Executive Committee of Committee E-19 on Chromatography), and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Tennessee Academy of Science. Mr. Lewis was an active member of the Kingsport Civitan Club for 40 years. He served on several committees and as Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, and Vice President. He was Governor, Area 7, Appalachian District in 1979 and 1980 and was active in promoting Civitan. Jack was an active member of Mafair United Methodist Church. He served as interim choir director for several churches in the Kingsport area.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years: Mary Lou Lewis of the home.
Children: Frank Lewis and wife Graca, Greensboro, NC, David Lewis, Atlanta, GA, John Lewis and wife Paige, Charlotte, NC, Roy Simmons and wife, Anna Beth, Columbia, SC, Karen McClelland, Greenville, SC and Emma Simmons, Fairview, TN.
Grandchildren: Sarah Pruitt and husband Christian, Matthew McClelland, Amy Lewis, Taylor Lewis, Rebecca Lewis, Rachel Lewis, Katie Simmons, Preston Lewis and Parks Lewis.
Great-granddaughter: Mary Grace Pruitt
Visitation will be Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 1:00 PM -2:00 PM at Mafair United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted in the church at 2:00 PM, with Reverend Damon Mitchell officiating. Military Graveside services will be conducted in East Lawn Memorial Park at 3:00 PM, with The American Legion.
Pallbearers will be Roy Simmons, Frank Lewis, David Lewis, John Lewis, Matthew McClelland, Taylor Lewis, Preston Lewis and Parks Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow Civitian members.
