Born on August 23, 1942, in Kingsport, Tennessee, Jerry was the son of the late Ralph Jackson Davenport and Grace Brown Davenport. He lived a life rooted in faith, family, service, and kindness. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era before returning home to build a career and a life dedicated to helping others.
Jerry retired from Eastman Chemical Company in April 1997 after 29 years of faithful service. Following his retirement, he continued to answer his true calling as a Baptist preacher, sharing God's Word with compassion, humility, and unwavering faith.
Music was one of Jerry's greatest joys. As a member of The Good Neighbor Quartet, he loved singing gospel music and often visited nursing homes, where his songs, warm smile, and gentle spirit brought comfort and happiness to countless residents. Whether preaching, singing, or simply sharing a conversation, Jerry never met a stranger. His welcoming heart and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
When he wasn't serving others, Jerry enjoyed spending time fishing, cheering on the Tennessee Volunteers, and occasionally playing Elvis Presley songs. Above all else, he cherished his family and the time they spent together.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of Tim and Lou Ann, Christine Davenport; brothers, Paul Davenport and Fred Davenport.
He is survived by his loving wife, Terry Davenport; his sons, Eric Davenport and Tim Davenport; his daughter, Lou Ann Robinson and her husband, Chris; sister, Margie McMullins and husband Huebert; along with many extended family members, dear friends, and all those whose lives were enriched by his ministry, music, and friendship.
Jerry's legacy is one of faith, love, generosity, and service. While he will be deeply missed, those who knew him take comfort in knowing that his work on earth is complete and that he has entered the presence of the Lord he faithfully served.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 27, 2026, from 5:00 P.M until 7:00 P.M. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 P.M. with Pastor George Winegar, Pastor Kevin Rose, and Eric Davenport officiating. A committal service with full military honors will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at East Lawn Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend are asked to arrive at the cemetery by 10:45 A.M.
Chris Robinson, Rick McMullins, Eddie Berry, Fred Davenport, Tyler McMullins, and Ken Thompson will serve as pallbearers. Warren Vicars will serve as honorary pallbearer.
