John George Curran, Jr. was born to John Curran, Sr. and Margie Butler Curran Monk on August 26, 1938 in Kingsport, Tennessee and entered his eternal rest on November 21, 2023 from his home in Blountville. He was a graduate of Dobyns Bennett High School and ETSU. A veteran of the U.S. Army and Sr. Research Chemist at Tennessee Eastman. In 1973 John along with his wife Pastor Sue Curran and five families pioneered a new church, Bible School and Conference Center—Shekinah Church. Upon his retirement from Eastman, he served this ministry as Executive Pastor/Administrator for many years. He is remembered by his ministry friends and flock as ‘The Man with a plan.’
Realizing a dream, manifesting an inspiration requires more than articulation. Accomplishing a vision takes perspiration, and John Curran was the man with a plan. His scientific mind - for decades a senior chemist a Tennessee Eastman Company - provided the blueprints that made Sue Curran's vision a reality. Not only fashioning the campus but also sculpting young lives to serve the Lord with carefulness and personal integrity.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Curran, mother Margie Monk, sisters Shelby Moore and Bobbi Crook. John is survived by his wife of 64 years Pastor Sue Curran. Also his brothers Sam Monk (Peggy) and Roger Monk, nieces Kim Wolfe (Doyle), Khristy Monk, Lori Moore, Reecelynn O’Brian (Paul), Roger Monk, Jr., Nick Adams (Rachel) and several great nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating his life will be held at Shekinah Church 394 Glory Rd, Blountville, TN 37617 on Saturday November 25th. Visitation will begin at noon with a service following at 1:00 pm. Rev. Barbara Jane Lambert will be officiating the service with the funeral sermon being delivered by Pastor Sue Curran. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in John’s memory to Shekinah Church Ministries.
