John Wayne Greer

He was born at Laurel Bloomery, TN on February 17, 1927; son of the late John F. and Anna Gentry Greer. He was preceded in death by his wives, Ruth Blevins Greer and Kathleen Baird Greer.

Mr. Greer was a lifelong resident of East Tennessee, living in Blountville since 1965. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Blountville, where he especially enjoyed his Men’s Sunday School class.

He retired from 30 years employment as a service technician for Montgomery Ward. He enjoyed wood carving, traveling and camping in his motor home.

Mr. Greer was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving on LST 1120 in the South Pacific. He organized the first reunion of his shipmates and always enjoyed the annual visits with them and their families.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Greer Mize and husband John of Blountville; son, Tim Greer and wife Pam of Chattanooga, TN. He was very proud of his six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his four sisters: Wilma Greer, Ethel Morefield of Laurel Bloomery, Alice Miller of Bristol, TN, and Iris Greer of Mountain City, TN, and two special friends: Florence Pearce and Ken Start.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Blountville. The Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Clay Austin, officiating. Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Tri-City Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Nathan Mize, Justin Mize, Lynn Greer, Mike Morefield, Steve Mize and Rusty Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Blountville. Everyone is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:45 a.m. for the service.
