

John C. (Jay) Miller, 84, of Kingsport, entered the gates of heaven on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. Jay lived most of his life in Kingsport, TN. He was the son of the late John David and Stella Thompson Miller. He was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and trustee for many decades. He was especially proud of the lasting relationships he built in his role as a youth Sunday school teacher.
Jay was a talented contractor. He loved doing beautiful woodwork with his son-in-law and grandsons. He cherished time with his family above all else and was a proud “girl dad.” He retired from Eastman Chemical Company as an Assistant Production Manager after 38 years. He was a 50-year member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge and a member of the Kingsport Commandery #33 Knights Templar. Jay was an active member of the Indian Springs Ruritan and was honored to receive “Man of the Year” for his contributions to the community.
Jay was preceded in death by his wife of 60+ years, Phyllis Miller, his sisters, Edith Clark, Evelyn Clark, Elizabeth Trussell, Dorothy Sykes, brothers, William Miller, Lloyd Miller, Worley Miller, and Ronald Miller.
Survivors include his daughters, Kristi Rhoten (Greg), Julie Newland (Sean), his two grandsons Jordan Rhoten (Jordan Leigh), Jonathan Newland and two great grand-children, Heidi and Nolan Rhoten. The family of John C. Miller will receive friends from 11am to 12 pm Friday, July 25, 2025, at Sunnyside Baptist Church of Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 12pm with Pastor Bill Sims officiating.
