Margaret Elizabeth “Peggy” Harlan, age 88 of Orlando, FL, originally from Blountville, TN, entered the house of the Lord during the early morning hours of August 17, 2017 at the home of her son, Richard Harlan, in Orlando, Florida. Peggy was born on August 8, 1929 in Bristol, VA to the late Floyd Holt and the late Jean Massengill Holt. On August 28, 1948, Peggy married Fred Harlan and raised two sons, Frederick “Freddy” and Richard.
Peggy was practically a lifelong resident of Blountville, graduated Blountville High School in 1947 and attended Virginia Intermont College. She was employed at the United Telephone Company and later worked in Sullivan County offices. She volunteered at the Sullivan County Public Library for several years. She was a "walking history book" on the history of Sullivan County and knew the genealogy of the families of Sullivan County.
Peggy enjoyed reading about history and travel, drawing dresses and collecting dolls of the Victorian Era. She was a member of Bethel View Baptist Church, attended Bellemont Presbyterian Church and supported Graham Bible College. She was active in several women’s clubs.
Peggy touched everyone with her goodness through those bright blue eyes. She brought out the best in people and took care of everyone who needed her. She took great care of Fred and, especially, Freddy until they passed. No gentler, more compassionate soul could be found. She loved God, her family and everyone around her, especially the children in her life. To know her was to love her.
Besides Richard, Peggy is survived by several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; a younger sister; her husband of 53 years, Fred Harlan; and son, Freddy Harlan. She also missed her dogs, Pearly Mae and Kilo.
Richard would like to thank all those friends who kept in touch and visited his mother through the years at her home in Blountville and in Orlando. He also thanks the wonderful staff at Brookdale Bristol and at Windsor Place Orlando who cared for her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Graham Bible College or the charity of your choice.
