Mildred “Mickey”
Mildred (Mickey) Lowrey Abernathy 81, of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away March 17,2011 at her home.
Mickey was born March 30, 1929 in Winston Salem, NC, to the late Hugh and Hallie Lowrey and had been a resident of Kingsport most of her life. She had also resided in NY, New Jersey and Mass. Mrs. Abernathy was a receptionist at the office of Dr. Samuel Wiles and also worked several years at the Sullivan County Register of Voters office. She loved people and never met a stranger. She loved to travel; she and Frank visited all 50 states. Mickey belonged to several ladies’ bridge clubs and was a relatively good bridge player. A graduate of Women’s College, UNC Greensboro, she was recruited by Tennessee Eastman Company in 1951 where she worked as a secretary. She met her husband Frank Wayne Abernathy at First Broad Street UMC and married May 17, 1952. Mickey was devoted to church activities at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church , and e she and Frank were advisors for Sing-Out Kingsport. Mickey was an excellent seamstress and knitter and enjoyed a variety of crafts. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving is her husband of 59 years, Frank Abernathy of the home. Children: Beth Mitchell and husband, Gary, Kingston, TN., Don Abernathy and wife Valerie, Kingsport, Carol Jennings and husband Jeff, Gray, TN and John Abernathy, Providence, RI. Grandchildren; Vicki Lawson and husband Greg, Fall Branch, Lt. Greg Mitchell, Columbus, Ms., and Dustin and Rachael Jennings, Gray, TN. Sister, Shirley Moffatt and husband James, Salem, NH. Several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, March 21, 2011 at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. A Memorial Service will follow at 7:00 PM with Reverend J. Thomas Phillips officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church Organ Fund.
