She was born June 28, 1935, in Burlington, North Carolina to the late Dewey and Maggie Lee Councilman. Nell had a passion for quilting and loved to cook and read. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished time spent with her family. Nell was devout in her faith and was fiercely dedicated to her church, First Baptist, in Blountville where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years.
In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, David Thomas “Tommie” Newman; son-in-law, Anthony “Tony” McDavid; brothers, Dewey Councilman and Herbert Councilman; sister, Charlotte McGuire.
Survivors include her daughters, Suzie (Greg) Grabowski, Sherry (Lewis) Oatts, and Cammie McDavid; grandchildren, Nicholas (Jessica) Oatts, Clint (April) McDavid, Spencer (Jessica) Oatts, Wesley (Caitlin) Ramey, Rebecca (James) Heath, and Colton (Danielle) McDavid; and seven great-grandchildren. Nell is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 10:00 A.M. until 10:50 A.M. at East Lawn Funeral Home. A service will follow at 11:00 A.M. in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dr. Clay Austin officiating. Entombment will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park. Sons-in-law and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Nell’s memory to a local animal shelter of your choice; however, for those so inclined to send flowers, please place your order with a local florist.
