Phyllis Gwin, age 57 of Kingsport, was taken up into the arms of Jesus during the evening hours of Saturday, February 24, 2018. Phyllis was born on November 15, 1960 in Hawkins County, TN to Kyle Mayes and Imogene Francis Mayes.

Phyllis was a woman who was dedicated to her family. From helping out at school events, hand-making costumes for her children, and making many crafts, her family was the center of her life. Phyllis loved cooking and gardening, and she found solace in listening to her favorite country musician, Vince Gill. Phyllis planted many seeds in her garden; but the most important seeds she planted were the seeds of love in her family’s life. Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Kyle Mayes; maternal grandparents, Charlie and Mae Hensley; and paternal grandparents, Ray and Alice Mayes. Left to cherish her memory are her devoted family members: her mother, Imogene Francis Mayes; the love of her life for the last 20 years, Phillip Tompkins; son, Nicholas Gwin; daughters, Tabathia Mayes, Stephanie Clemons, Ashley Payne and husband Michael, and Satori Tompkins; grandchildren, Thomas, Seth, Ethan, and Justin; brothers, Max Mayes, Jerry Mayes, and Gary Mayes; and sisters, Patsy Linkous and husband Randall, and Lois Durham.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Johnson City Office, located at 508 Princeton Rd. Ste. 102, Johnson City, TN 37601, www.cancer.org (423)-926-2921

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at East Lawn Funeral Home with Garland Tipton and Danny Blankenbeckler officiating. Interment services will follow at 12:00 pm at East Lawn Memorial Park with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Phil and Satori,
I didn't have the honor of knowing Phyllis for a very long time, but the time I did know her, I know how much her family meant to her. Phil, any time you mentioned her name, your whole face would light up. Noone can ever take that away from you, she will always be there. Satori, you are the last great person your mom brought into this world. Noone can take that away, keep her with you in your heart. Phyllis is now pain free and has brought all this goodness to the world.
From my heart to yours,
Wenda Prout
