She was born on June 29, 1946, in Russell County, Virginia, to the late Fred and Elizabeth Chafin. She often spoke fondly of her childhood and the time she spent with her parents and siblings. Veanis loved her family with a ferocity that never wavered. She had a giving heart and often put the happiness and needs of others above her own.
Veanis was a true Jane of all trades. In her youth, she spent time in the Peace Corps. She cared for children in Sunday school, did custodial work at the hospital, and made cheerleading uniforms as a seamstress. Veanis loved making a good pleated skirt. But more than anything, she found her greatest joy in being a devoted mother and grandmother.
Veanis had a gift for seeing the bright side of any situation. She loved music and animals. Despite having a black thumb, she adored plants and did her darndest to make things grow. She was a devoted Christian woman who loved the Lord above all else.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Deaurine Reynolds; and two brothers, Iralon Chafin and Fred Chafin, Jr.
She is survived by four children, Elizabeth Atchley, David Burton, Rebecca Suzanne Burton, and Jamie Burton; brother, Freddie Chafin; sisters, Catherine Chapman and Shelvy Houser; grandchildren, Chelsea MacIntosh, Ashton Shirey, Matthew Burton, Anna Burton, Amelia Burton, Ellie Burton, Madison Burton, Melissa Paige Dixon; great-grandchildren, James Dixon, Troy Dixon, Sullivan Shirey, Laney MacIntosh, and Lathe Burton. Veanis is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The world is a better place for having had her in it and a much sadder one now that she’s gone. She will live on in the hearts of her children and grandchildren, remembered for the love, faith, and light she shared with everyone around her.
Services will be private.
East Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park is honored to serve the family of Veanis Ann Chafin.
