Wendell Laverne Nelson, age 92, entered into rest July 25, 2013 at Broadmore Senior Living. Born in Chicago, Illinois, a son to the late Carl Gustav and Eda Nelson who were Swedish immigrants, Wendell had been a resident of Fort Myers, Florida from 1951 to 1999, and had lived in Jonesborough since 1999. He was a graduate of Lane Tech in Chicago. His 22 years of military service included the National Guard, the Army Air Corps in China, Burma, India and the Pacific Theater with the B-29 unit during World War II and later, the Naval Air Reserves. Wendell attended the University of Florida. He began his work career as a boy selling newspapers in Chicago, was a soda clerk at Walgreens in Chicago, a carpenter, a Gulf Life Insurance Agent and retired as a United States Post Office Employee. Wendell was a charter member of the McGregor Baptist Church in Ft. Myers where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and was involved in Child Evangelism. While living in Tennessee, Wendell was a member of the Boones Creek Christian Church. His hobbies included painting, acting, dancing, and photography. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Bettie Lee Dyson, a brother, Frank Nelson and a sister, Lorraine Rabette. Survivors include his children, Richard L. Nelson and wife Ann, Dynel N. Savery and husband Bob, Carl M. Nelson; grandchildren, Richard Nelson II and wife Deborah, Rosalyn N. Helms and husband Allan, Kenneth P. Nelson, Andrew Savery and wife Allisa, Scott Savery and wife Susan, David Savery and wife Laura, Laura Hartman and husband Christian, Kaitlyn Nelson, Erin Shaw and husband James; great-grandchildren, Adam Nelson, Sydney Nelson, Ethan Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Kylee Helms, Colton Helms, Grace Savery, Josiah Savery, Rebekah Savery, Kara Savery, Anna Savery, Will Savery, Hailey Nelson, Claire Savery, Emma Savery, Savannah Shaw and Michael Shaw. A memorial service will be held Thursday August 1, at Boones Creek Christian Church, at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Boones Creek Christian Church Mission Fund.
