Barry was born on April 26, 1945, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He married Emily Sue McMath on November 30, 1974, in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Barry was in the Army for eight years reaching the rank of sergeant. He served as a captain for United Airlines up until 2005, during which he flew 747s and 767s for some of United's longest international routes for many years. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, his hobbies included building experimental aircraft and flying radio-controlled airplanes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice (Barrett) Stolte and Emil Stolte. He is survived by his wife, Emily Sue (McMath) Stolte, his sister, Joanne Stolte, his four children, Michael Stolte (Eva), Lauren Sarnwick (Steven), Steven Stolte (Amanda), and Christopher Stolte (Natalie), and six grandchildren.
