Kathleen Joyce Glascott

Kathleen (Kathy) Glascott (née Joyce), a devoted educator, published author, and beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, creativity, and passion for new experiences.

She was born September 14, 1947, in Buffalo, NY, a daughter of Thomas R. Joyce and Joanne Joyce (née Poth).

Kathy went to grade school at St. Ambrose and St. John the Evangelist and attended high school at Victory Academy. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education at Buffalo State College.

For decades, Kathy served as a dedicated, impactful kindergarten and pre-K teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools, spending the majority of her career at School No. 78, an early childhood center. She finished her teaching career as a 5th grade teacher at Holy Redeemer in Kissimmee, Florida. In retirement Kathy realized her lifelong dream of being a writer. She published the novels Loving Christy and Widow’s Weeds, the book of short stories Elvis Saves a Marriage, and a humor-filled personal blog, This and That.

Kathy was a central pillar of her retirement community, Solivita, in Kissimmee. She was a fixture at the Solwriters coffee house readings and an active force in countless groups, including a writing group, book clubs, the travel club, the British Isles Club, and local social circles.

Kathy’s later years were defined by adventure as she explored Europe, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Just four months before she passed away, Kathy travelled to Norway to see the northern lights.

In 2020, Kathy’s fierce fighting spirit and immense will to live were put to the ultimate test when she contracted COVID-19 prior to the availability of vaccines. Surviving multiple near-death medical crises and months in intensive care and rehabilitation, she fought her way back to independence, supported faithfully by her loving friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John (Dan) Glascott, and her parents, Thomas and Joanne, and her siblings Thomas C. Joyce and Mary Joyce-Young (John).

She is survived by her daughter Brenda Glacott and daughter-in-law Amy Borden and her siblings Michael Joyce (Carolyn Guyer), Susan Eager (late Gary), Rosemary Joyce (Russell Sheptak), Brian Joyce (Nanette), and Tim Joyce (Connie). Kathy is survived by her close friend Susan Schulman and her partner Mike McBride as well as many nieces and nephews.
