For 20 years, Melinda served as a Corrections Officer at Rikers in New York—a role that demanded steadiness and strength, and one she met with the kind of hard-earned resilience that shows itself not in grand displays, but in showing up, day after day, with purpose. In work that could test anyone’s spirit, her devotion to doing what needed to be done spoke quietly of loyalty, wisdom, and a selfless sense of duty.
Melinda lived in Davenport, Florida, and held those she loved close. She shared more than 33 years with her husband, Arnold Brooks, a bond marked by deep care and mutual cherishing—two lives intertwined through ordinary days made meaningful by steadfast love. Melinda was beloved and deeply cherished, not only for what she did, but for the unwavering way she stood with others, giving strength where it was needed and constancy where it was valued.
Melinda is survived by her husband, Arnold Brooks; her sister-in-law and best friend, Edivia B Garner; her nieces, Ermelinda Benitez and Edivia Benitez Henderson; and her nephew, Richard Garner.
Melinda was preceded in death by her mother, Princess Garner; her father, George St. Claire Lee; her brother, Melvin Garner; and her sister, Stacey Garner.
Though her days have now come to their close, the imprint of Melinda’s devoted heart endures—in love carried forward, in loyalty remembered, and in the quiet wisdom of a life lived with steadfast care.
