A storm is approaching. There are 3 Mothers, in 3 cottages, watching anxiously from their doors that face the lake. Some of the Mothers have a child in their arms, or they’re holding back their youngest ones from running out the door. Rain is falling and the wind Is gusting. Lighting and darkening clouds are over the Sand Islands, approaching their homes and children. Hurricane Hazel is on their minds! Their broods are running around in the rain with beach towels tied around their necks, playing Super-Heroes.
‘In brightest day, in darkest night, …’
Batman says to Lee, “Look at these big puddles!”
“Yeah?”
“Let’s ‘slide into home’.”
As the swirling storm approaches, in dismay, the Mothers watch as their broods line up, single-file, and charge the huge puddle.
Droplet’s of mud and rain fill faces and towels are soaked as they slide through the puddle. Giggles and laughter begets more giggles and laughter.
Our Mothers are now outside being soaked by the storm,
“Get inside! There is a storm coming.”
We finally hear their cries and retreat.
Now …., Mom – the last of the 3, has passed. Facing Lake Simcoe, there was Aunt Helen’s cottage, our Mom’s cottage, then Aunt Mary’s cottage.
Our Moms made our summers - the magical summers they were.
