Alexander "Alex" Marion Cuningham III, age 69, went home to be with his Savior on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. Alex was born and raised in Knoxville, graduating from West High School in 1972. He went on to graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1977. He was a brilliant engineer and had a successful career working with companies such as Phillips, Control Technology Inc., and Online Development Inc. (OLDI).
Alex's faith was very strong, and he never met a stranger, always offering help to those who needed a hand. Over his lifetime, he was a member of Church of the Ascension (Knoxville) and All Saints Episcopal Church (Morristown). He sang in the choir and served the churches through Vestry and other leadership roles. In the last few years, Alex's faith grew as he studied God's word in Bible study led by Pastor Tony Buchanan from Manley Baptist Church (Morristown). He loved playing golf and guitar, passing both passions down to his children and grandchildren. Much of his free time was spent playing golf on his home course The Country Club (Morristown). He enjoyed weekly jamming sessions at The Picking Parlor. In addition, Alex ventured on many motorcycle excursions across the country through BMW Riders of Knoxville. Above all, his crown jewel was being “PaPa” to his six grandchildren.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander "Sandy" Marion Cuningham, Jr. and Eva Jenkins Cuningham.
He leaves behind his daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Cuningham Whittaker (T.C.) and their children: Campbell, Hank, Evelyn, and Bobby; son, Alexander Marion Cuningham IV (Kim) and their children: Alexander “Vee” Marion Cuningham V and Archie; beloved companion, Leslie Ann Grossman; sisters, Lyn Warren and Nancy Ray; nieces, Katie and Rebecca; as well as many adored Memphis cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, February 17, 2024, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 601 W Main St, Morristown, TN 37814, with The Rev. J. Mark Holland officiating. Alex's celebration of life will follow at The Country Club, 1686 Doyal Drive Morristown, TN 37814.
