Benny "Ben" Joe Fannin

Benny Joe Fannin, aged 90, of Knoxville, TN, passed away on June 26, 2024. Born on November 16, 1933, in Pikeville, KY, Ben was a beloved figure in his community and a pillar of strength for his family.

Ben's life was marked by his devotion to his family and his passion for sports. He was an avid fisherman and an exceptional athlete, excelling in every sport he participated in. His athletic prowess was evident during his high school years at Betsy Layne High School, where he not only played on the first baseball team but also shone brightly on the basketball court. His outstanding performance led him to be inducted into the Betsy Layne High School Hall of Fame. Ben continued his athletic journey at Pikeville Junior College and the University of South Carolina, achieving significant milestones and contributing to his teams' successes.

Beyond sports, Ben was dedicated to his community. He began his career coaching the boys' basketball team at Betsy Layne High School and was a vital member of the Betsy Layne Fire Department. His commitment to service was further demonstrated when he helped establish the Floyd County Rescue Squad and played a crucial role in the recovery efforts following the tragic school bus crash in 1958. Ben's professional life also included significant roles at Weaver Gas Company, Consolidated Coal Company, and BHP Utah, where he retired as the land manager for the Eastern United States. Ben's kindness and generosity were the cornerstones of his character.

He was a proud father and grandfather, always putting his family first. He is survived by his daughters, Benie Lynn Hammond (Arnold) of Stanville, KY, Tami Kintz (Mike) of Knoxville, TN, and Misti Nobert (Steve) of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Breck Hammond (Heather) of Allen, KY, Jordan Kintz of Knoxville, TN, Benjamin Nobert of Knoxville, TN, and Mallory Nobert of Knoxville, TN ; and great-grandchildren, Byron Hammond (Rachel) of Pikeville, KY, Kevin Hammond of Allen, KY, and Ethan Hammond of Allen, KY. Ben was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosceine Layne Fannin, his parents, Rowe and Alva Fannin, his brother Rowe Fannin, Jr., granddaughter R. Chase Nobert, and great-grandson Hunter Hammond.

Receiving of friends will be held on Saturday, July 6th 2024 at 1pm with a Celebration of Life to follow at 3pm. Services will be officiated by Kerry Bond. Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, honoring Ben's lifelong commitment to generosity and care for others.

Ben's legacy of love, commitment, and community service will forever be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
