Betty L. Underwood, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home on July 2, 2026. She was born on April 9, 1931 to William B. and Lauretta Dukes Underwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William T. (Bill) Underwood.
Betty was a graduate of Rule High School in Knoxville and the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of the first class to graduate with a Master of Library Science degree. She also earned an Ed.S.(Education Specialist) degree from UT.
She began her teaching career at the Pi Beta Phi School in Gatlinburg, TN, when Gatlinburg was a tiny little town that virtually closed down during the winter months. She taught English and was Librarian at Pi Beta Phi for several years before returning to Knoxville where she served as Librarian at Carter High School until her retirement.
In addition to her love of books, Betty developed a love for music in childhood. She enjoyed playing both piano and organ and was a church pianist for several years. She also loved traveling and was always ready for the next trip.
She was a faithful member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Kim Underwood and her nieces, Pamela Underwood and Amy Underwood, and her lifelong friend, who was like a sister, Marjorie Householder Chance.
