Billie Lou McGaha

November 22, 1922March 21, 2018

Billie Lou (Sutton) McGaha, Knoxville, passed away at home on March 21, 2018 at the age of 95. She was born on November 22, 1922 in McCaysville, Georgia, to the late Ed and Carrie Sutton. Following high school she went to work in Atlanta as a telephone operator. It was there during World War II that she was recruited to go somewhere in Tennessee to work on something the recruiters could not tell her about. The job turned out to be in the Manhattan Project at the K-25 Plant in Oak Ridge where she was one of the first female chemical operators. It was there that she met and married A. O. (Mac) McGaha. Their marriage lasted for 65 years before Mac passed away six years ago. Billie is survived by Mike (Lois) McGaha of Cosby, TN and Steve (Darlene) McGaha of Knoxville, five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her favorite nieces Allowee Stinnett of Las Vegas, Nevada, Bettye Sue Gibson of Strongsville, Ohio, and Linda Freeman of Oregon. A special thanks and appreciation goes to her close friends Melinda Arden, Larry McCord, and Frank Newberry. Billie was retired from Knox County Schools and was a member of the Lenoir City Church of Christ. A Graveside Service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Berry Highland West, 9913 Sherrill Blvd. Knoxville, TN 37932. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Fort Sanders Foundation. Condolences may be shared with the family online at www.BerryHighlandWest.com.

We are saddened by your loss. Both of us have very fond memories of visits and conversations with both Billie and Mac and we are very fortunate to have the privilege of knowing them as friends and as part of our Christian Family. We will really miss bumping into Billy occasionally when we go out to eat. She always had the prettiest smile and warmest hugs! Knowing and loving Billy will be a cherished and blessed memory!
